About The Chef

101 Steak executive chef Joe Ahn is no stranger to hard work and culinary collaboration. His parents and grandmother, natives of Korea, and his three brothers were all skilled in the art of Korean, Chinese and Japanese cooking and took turns directing the kitchen at the family’s restaurant in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. They would also wait tables, wash dishes, host and bartend; it was a true family affair that established Ahn’s culinary ambitions.

His exposure to this multitude of cuisines began when he was only two years old. “Our town was so small that it would have been impossible for my family to serve only Korean food,” says Ahn. “Instead they offered a mix of Korean, Japanese and Chinese food for broader appeal, so I had a lot of experience with each of these.”

Ahn attended the Culinary Institute of America and then used this prestigious degree to delve into new gastronomic genres. While working at Veni Vidi Vici and Pricci in Atlanta, he was exposed to the nuances of fine Italian cuisine, and a stint at Buckhead Diner honed his knowledge of American fare with a nostalgic edge. In 2000, Ahn became executive chef at SoHo in Vinings, which would begin his long history with 101 Steak’s owners. Leading that kitchen for 14 years, Ahn drew inspiration from his Asian-American upbringing, his solid foundation in continental preparations and his affection for bold Southern suppers to turn the American bistro into a true melting pot.

At 101 Steak, his menu showcases his eclectic background. In addition to the mixture of dry aged and Black Angus beef offered (his 32-ounce tomahawk chop is a signature item), Ahn is displaying his diverse skill set with dishes such as seafood misto, scallop crudo topped with “scallop bacon” and homemade burrata and side items like jalapeño corn brûlée with smoked bacon.

“We have familiar steakhouse options, but guests will also see a more chef-driven selection of appetizers and specials and won't be limited to only meat items,” says Ahn. “101 Steak is a neighborhood restaurant where patrons can bring their whole family.”

Ahn resides in Smyrna with his wife Monique, two sons and two dogs. His home-cooked meals for his family are well rounded with his signature global influence and range from Korean barbecue to classic posole to handmade gnocchi with slow-smoked pork shoulder.

About 101 Concepts

The Atlanta-based entrepreneurial team behind 101 Concepts relies on the dynamic combination of friendship and shared work ethic for their successful partnership. The group came together through their Brooklyn backgrounds - meeting as bus boys at a New York restaurant and as roommates at Iona College. Luckily for diners in the Southeast, those shared experiences led them to finding their niche in friendly, neighborhood restaurants and pubs in Atlanta and Rosemary Beach, Florida. Steve Buero and Chris Segal opened SOHO in September 1997 and showed a knack for bringing the right concept to the right area. Next, the partners, along with Phil Roness, went Irish with Meehan’s Public House in October 2002. There are now five Meehan's locations throughout Metro Atlanta (Vinings, Downtown, Sandy Springs, Buckhead and Atlantic Station). After opening Sandy Springs staples Cibo e Beve and Food 101 and Castleberry Hill barbecue joint Smoke Ring, the crew decided to take their hospitality to the beach, obtaining Rosemary Beach's Restaurant Paradis in 2014. In spring 2016, their dreams of owning a steakhouse finally came true with the opening of 101 Steak in Vinings.
